Memminger Fischertag und Kinderfest

Every year at the end of July on the last Thursday before the summer holiday start, there is big party time in Memmingen, both for the children and the adults. First of all there is the traditional Kinderfest (www.memmingen.de/762.html), where all pupils from Memmingen’s elementary school disguise in a particular way, they all come together at the famous place “Weinmarkt” in Memmingen and at 1:30 pm there is a colorful procession through the streets of Memmingen leading to the stadium where the processions ends. On the premises of the stadium there are plenty of activities for the young. Another spectacular event is the Fischertag (www.fischertagsverein.de), especially the Fischertags Eve is definitely worthwhile. Countless bands adorn the pedestrian zone with plenty of culinary delights offered everywhere. A real summer feeling in the city.

Wallenstein festival

Every four years the traditional Wallenstein-Festival takes place in which the history of the former commander Wallenstein’s residence in Memmingen during the Thirty Years' War is reenacted with more than 4,500 participants, making it one of the largest history festivals in Europe. The next historical week takes place in 2026.

Further activities

When it comes to cultural events Memmingen has a lot to offer especially during the summer time. For more than 30 years there has been the famous culture festival, Memminger Meile. For about two weeks there is cabaret and comedy time in different places of Memmingen. At the end a cabaret price will be awarded to the best actor. If you like going to the theatre you can do so in the Landestheater Schwaben which presents classic and contemporary pieces.

In the city park Neue Welt, situated on the former State Garden Show area which took place in Memmingen in 2000, to the north of the old town of Memmingen, there are wonderful walking trails, a small lake with a fountain and during the summertime you can enjoy a cool beer in the garden restaurant. Young people enjoy beach volleyball and skating on the half-pipes. A children’s playground and plenty of space to splash around for the little ones make this area a great place for families.

Memmingen has an ice rink and offers ice-skating from mid-September to the end of March Disco skating in the evening is very popular with young people.

For those who are keen on fitness training in a sophisticated atmosphere we recommend the H³O Studio in Memmingen, just 3 km from the Allgäu apartment away. It is possible to do the workout as a guest.

On a rainy day, we recommend for families the indoor playground Kiddiko with bouncy castles, climbing walls, slides and table tennis. www.kiddiko.de

Swimming enthusiasts have reason to rejoice: A new combined indoor and outdoor pool, called Schwimmwerk, is currently being built in Memmingen. Since the existing indoor pool, built in the 1970s, no longer meets modern standards, Memmingen residents are looking forward to its opening, scheduled for 2026. The nearest leisure pools are the Nautilla in Illertissen or the Cambomare in Kempten.

If you are interested in museums you may visit the Museum St. Anthony, Antonitermuseum (www.memmingen.de/strigel-museum.html), which is located in the city centre. There you will learn more about the Hospital Order of St. Anthony, which settled down in Memmingen during the Middle Ages with their hospital and Order. An interesting aspect "healing through faith" means the relation between the experience of illness and a deep veneration of saints at the same time.

Also located in the same building is the Strigel Museum, dedicated to Memmingen’s famous family of artists Strigel. Their paintings and sculptures were known far beyond the city walls of Memingen. Bernhard Strigel was a portrait painter at the court of Emperor Maximilian I. Experience a great number of works of art of the late Gothic and early Renaissance period. Enjoy a cup of tea or coffee with a delicious slice of cake on the terrace of the museum’s café.
