Allgäu Airport

Are you fascinated by planes? Then come to the Allgäu Airport, the highest airport in Germany and you will be delighted by the cosmopolitan atmosphere. On a guided tour through the airport premises you will have the opportunity to look behind the scenes. The airport bistro is also very inviting. If you want to go on adventurous outdoor trips like canoeing or kayaking, or if you are interested in sightseeing tours to explore the Allgäu, you can book guided tours directly at the airport. The airAllgäu GmbH offers scenic flights to Lake Constance, the Allgäu Alps, the Ammersee and to Munich.

                                                       

Buxheim

Buxheim is only 6 km away and it’s an ideal place for having fun. What about riding on the pedalo or on a rowing boat on the small lake of Buxheim or do you prefer to play mini- golf? On weekdays we suggest going there in the afternoon and during the weekend it’s open all day. There is also a nice walk along the famous adventure trail through the forest (Walderlebnispfad). Traditional Swabian food is served in the restaurants on the lake.

Benninger Ried

Have you ever heard about the famous flower “Riednelke” of the Benninger Ried?  Situated in a unique moorland, it’s the “jewel” of it and it doesn’t grow elsewhere in the whole wide world than here in Benningen. You will also find plenty of other rare and partially endangered animal and plant species. You will also learn about the five pillars of the Kneipp Medicine, which was founded by the famous Father Sebastian Kneipp. Kneipp was born 1821 in Stephansried, Ottobeuren. Experience the walk through the Kneipp-Tretanlage where you walk through cold water, which is supposed to stimulate the circulation of the blood vessels.

Find out more about the history of the Benninger Ried and its numerous animal and plant species by visiting the Ried museum. Nearby there is also a chapel. Guided tours on demand.

The museum and a nice little café is open from 2 to 6 pm at the weekends from 1st April 1 to 15th October.

Memmingen

The ice rink Memminger Eissporthalle offers ice-skating from mid-September to the end of March Disco skating in the evening is very popular with young people.

Famous guidied city tours

Would you like to know more about Memmingen and its history? By joining one of the famous city tours you will learn the history of the Memminger Mau which is quite funny in the end. There is a tremendous view from the tower of St. Martin's Church on the old town of Memmingen. Available languages are English and French. Memminger Fischertag

Every year at the end of July on the last Thursday before the summer holiday start, there is big party time in Memmingen, both for the children and the adults. First of all there is the traditional Kinderfest, where all pupils from Memmingen’s elementary school disguise in a particular way, they all come together at the famous place “Weinmarkt” in Memmingen and at 1:30 pm there is a colorful procession through the streets of Memmingen leading to the stadium where the processions ends. On the premises of the stadium there are plenty of activities for the young. Another spectacular event is the Fischertag.This event, especially the Fischertags Eve is definitely worthwhile. Countless bands adorn the pedestrian zone with plenty of culinary delights offered everywhere. A real summer feeling in the city.

Wallenstein Festival

Every four years the traditional Wallenstein-Festivale takes place in which the history of the former commander Wallenstein’s residence in Memmingen during the Thirty Years' War is reenacted with more than 4,500 participants, making it one of the largest history festivals in Europe. The next historical week takes place in 2016.

                     

 

Further activities

Among Memmingen’s more than 150 bars, restaurants and wine bars we are sure that you will soon find your favorite restaurant. In the information folder of your apartment we have listed the most popular restaurants of Memmingen. Cinema friends will certainly enjoy the Cineplex which offers a great variety of films.

When it comes to cultural events Memmingen has a lot to offer especially during the summer time. For more than 30 years there has been the famous culture festival, Memminger Meile . For about two weeks it's cabaret and comedy time in different places of Memmingen. At the end a cabaret price will be awarded to the best actor. The State Theatre of Swabia offers a large repertoire of classical and contemporary theatre.

In the city park Neue Welt, situated on the former State Garden Show area which took place in Memmingen in 2000, to the north of the old town of Memmingen, there are wonderful walking trails, a small lake with a fountain and during the summertime you can enjoy a cool beer in the garden restaurant. Young people enjoy beach volleyball and skating on the half-pipes. A children’s playground and plenty of space to splash around for the little ones make this area a great place for families.

For those who are keen on fitness training in a sophisticated atmosphere we recommend the H³O Studio in Memmingen, just 3 km from the Allgäu apartment away. You can train as a guest and only pay for the training session. Next to it, in the Pizzeria, Da Fabrizioy you will definitely get the best brick-oven pizzas in town plus the nicest host.

In the indoor tennis courts nearby Tennishalle you will also have the opportunity to play badminton and to climb. Highly recommended for families is the indoor playground Kiddoko, a dream world for children with bouncy castles, climbing walls, slides, table tennis and an e-kart racing and an own area for toddlers.

The bicycle friends from the bicycle community ADFC-Radtreff meet every Wednesday at 6:30 pm from April to September and on Saturdays from October to March at 1:30 pm in the market square (Marktplatz) of Memmingen. Depending on your condition, you are free to choose between five groups who do all different tours in terms of speed and distance.

Or how about cycling down the river “Iller” that leads from Oberstdorf to Ulm starting from Buxheim? There is also an interesting bicycle tour from Bad Grönenbach to Bad Wörishofen, a scenic route. For more information visit www.dein-allgaeu.de.

Memmingen has a public indoor swimming pool Memminger Hallenbad, a purpose-built building from the 70s. It is not at all a leisure pool, but those who just want to swim for physical fitness are right here. There is also a separate children's pool to splash around for the kids. Please watch out for the opening times because the pool is also used by schools and sport clubs . The next public leisure pools are Nautilla in Illertissen or Cambomare in Kempten.

The Memminger outdoor pool Memminger Freibad is only 3.5 km away from the Allgäu apartment and offers a lap pool, a family pool with a slide and a pool for toddlers. There are many shady trees on the spacious lawn. A perfect place to spend a hot summer day.

                    



If you like reading and spending your free time with a good book, then go to the public library of Memmingen, Stadtbücherei Memmingen, located in the historic Antonierhaus and borrow some new books. They offer a wide range of books and DVDs for all ages.

If you have enough time how about a visit of the Museum St. Anthony, Antonitermuseum, which is located there. There you will learn more about the Hospital Order of St. Anthony, which settled down in Memmingen during the Middle Ages with their hospital and Order. An interesting aspect "healing through faith" means the relation between the experience of illness and a deep veneration of saints at the same time.

Also located in the same building is the Strigel Museum, dedicated to Memmingen’s famous family of artists Strigel. Their paintings and sculptures were known far beyond the city walls of Memingen. Bernhard Strigel was a portrait painter at the court of Emperor Maximilian I. Experience a great number of works of art of the late Gothic and early Renaissance period.
